One of the oldest cities in the country, this is the one that named it. The almost 900 years of the history of Portugal are not enough to tell the history of Porto. Known for Port wine, this is a city of rebellious merchants that helped to build one of the biggest empires in history.
Capital of the Roman Gallaecia. Capital of the Swabian Kingdom. Oldest diocese in the Iberian Peninsula. Now the city with the youngest population in Portugal, this bimillennial city has so many churches, people call it the Portuguese Rome. Come and see them. One might even show you true love.
If you want to really know what Portugal is all about, Guimarães is the place to visit. Walking the streets of this old mediaeval city is to walk the path of the first Kings of Portugal. Miracles, legends, castles, palaces and even a hidden Templar secret. All can be found in the city known as Portugal’s cradle.
After working in the tourism industry for almost 20 years, 4 of which as a tour guide, I decided to also put my expertise as an archaeologist to use, making these experiences truly unique.
With this experience you will be able to understand a bit more about the roman influence in the Portuguese culture, by visiting Braga, one of the oldest cities in Portugal, the amazing D. Diogo de Sousa Museum, and then retrace the steps of the roman military as we discover the Geira, the "Via XVIII" of Antonine's Itinerary. We will stop close to one of its "mansiones", to have a proper northern Portuguese lunch. After lunch we will literally experience a roman road as we take a walk on one the most well-preserved parts of it, where not only will you be able to see archaeological remains but also see one of the most well protected wild areas of Portugal: Mata da Albergaria in the Peneda-Gerês National Park.
When you think about Celts you probably think of the British Isles. Well, they were here too and probably before going North. Come and see how they used to live.
